BEIJING , May 31 (Xinhua) -- The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vice president Sergey Bubka said on Saturday that China should be highly prepared for serious battle in the 2022 Winter Olympics bid.

Bubka will visit China for the upcoming Athletics Asian Championships, which kicks off on June 3 in Wuhan.

"When I was competed, I always said that you didn't lose if you have even one attempt in reserve. Therefore, Beijing has this attempt and has the chance to win as well as the other city. You must believe and be highly prepared for very serious battle," he said in a email to Xinhua.

Bubka expressed his trust for China to host major events.

"China has already established its reputation as a country which has hosted major international sports events at the highest level. The best example is the successful Olympics Games in Beijing in 2008," he said.

"For sure, China is much more experienced in conducting summer sports competitions but everything has its beginning. Both cities bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics are strong candidates and each of them has strengths and weaknesses ," he added.

Beijing will co-host the Games with Zhangjiakou, a city of Hebei province some 200 kilometers northwest to the Chinese capital, if it wins the bid. Almaty, Kazakhstan, is the other candidate city vying for the event.

The IOC will select the host city on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur.

Veterans of the modeling industry say that long hours, skipped meals and chronic pain from wearing high heels are just a few of the things they must endure to make it big.

In a small , 10-square-meter room, a dozen women wearing heavy makeup and short dresses rest on chairs. Cosmetics, food and clothes are scattered on tables around them.

One of the models, Zhao Ruiliang, finishes half of her coldboxed lunch and puts her face down on a table to rest. Before she lies down, Zhao puts a Kleenex over her face to keep her makeup from being ruined.

The models are taking a short lunch break in a backstage room at an automobile exhibition in Beijing. Some just lean against their chair backs, but their top concern isn't getting rest. They're more worried about making sure their hair and makeup stay in place.

Zhao , 22, from Shanghai, says that the backstage room is nice compared to some of the ones she's been in. Some don't even have chairs, so the models are forced to sit on small cushions.

Many people see modeling as an easy job in which people make money by walking and posing in nice clothes. Those who pursue it as a career do it because it looks glamorous, but there's a lot of hard work that goes on behind the stage.

Sun Yuhan, 24, who is from Dalian , Liaoning province, understands that better than most people. She works as a model in Shanghai but also travels to other cities for jobs. On one occasion, Sun went to Beijing to model on the Great Wall. The night before the shoots, Sun came down with a serious cold and suffered from diarrhea and vomiting all night. Even though she didn't sleep that night, she still had to be at work the next morning with a smile on her face.

"I really missed my parents at the time, but I did not call them because I feared that they would worry about me. I really felt helpless that night as I was alone without anyone to help me, even to do something simple like get a hot cup of water ," she says.

Because there's no set time for meals, Sun often only eats once a day. Her meals are often cold by the time she gets around to eating them. "Stomach trouble is an occupational disease for models and I'm no exception. My stomach often goes on strike when I am busy for work," she said.

Many women in China in their 20s still live under the care of their parents. But models like Sun, who are always on the road for work, must take care of everything on their own. "Because I wear high heels all day, my legs often cramp at night. There's no effective way to eradicate it. So as long as I have time, I soak and massage my feet. My friends joke that I am behaving like an old man ," Sun says.

In November 2006, during the Beijing Fashion Week, Sun slept less than 20 hours the entire week. The dress rehearsal for the show finished at 3 am each night and the next day's rehearsal began at 6:30 am.

"To save time, for several days I just slept in the theater. The corridor, restroom and stage were all my beds," she says.

Dang Jiani, 25 , a veteran model from Beijing, agrees that the lifestyle is hard on a woman's body. "Models are not allowed to wear silk stockings, but sometimes the backstage is too cold and we use a shawl to keep warm when resting and waiting for next performance," she says.

"When we have the time for lunch, the boxed lunch is already cold. So we all have thermos cups. Besides, because we have to stand for so long while wearing high heels, almost all the models have varicose veins. A thick shawl , small cushion and thermos cup are three magic weapons in a model's suitcase for all four seasons," Dang says.

Dang's mother once came to an auto show and found her daughter backstage, sitting on the ground and eating a coldboxed lunch.

"She cried that time and since then she has never visited me at any of the auto fairs. But anytime she has a chance, she will make a bunch of dishes I like," Dang says.

Unstable income

Because of her outstanding appearance and diligence, Sun gained her first taste of fame in the modeling circle at the age of 16. She surprised the judges and spectators with her talent, and won second place at the 2006 Asia Supermodel competition. She was also the champion of that competition of China area.
